Passengers travelling through Terminals 2 and 3 at Accra International Airport will no longer be required to remove laptops, liquids, shoes or belts during security screening following the installation of new screening technology by the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).
In a public notice issued on July 11, 2026, GACL announced that the advanced security equipment has been deployed as part of efforts to improve passenger convenience while maintaining high aviation security standards.
Under the new system, passengers can keep laptops and other large electronic devices inside their cabin baggage during screening. Shoes and belts may also remain on, except where additional checks are required based on security assessments.
Passengers will also be allowed to leave liquids, aerosols and gels in their carry-on bags during screening. However, the existing restriction of 100 millilitres per container remains unchanged.
GACL said the new screening system is equipped with an automatic tray return system, allowing trays to be returned automatically after screening to speed up the repacking process and reduce waiting times.
According to the company, the technology will be introduced in phases and will operate alongside the existing screening equipment during the transition period.
The installation forms part of GACL’s broader strategy to modernise airport operations, enhance passenger experience and strengthen aviation security.
The latest upgrade follows the introduction of the Advance Passenger Information and Passenger Name Record (API/PNR) system in August 2025, which enables security agencies to screen passenger information before arrival and departure.

Passengers can now keep Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAGs) in their cabin baggage during screening as separate screening of LAGs may not be required. Kindly note that security regulations still prohibit LAGs that exceed 100ml in volume per container. - Faster processing
A new Automatic Tray Return System will quickly return trays to passengers for repacking of divested items.
Migration onto the new system will be done progressively or in phases and alongside the existing procedures and equipment.
