President John Dramani Mahama has assured persons affected by the Akosombo and Kpong dam spillage that government remains committed to completing the verification process and ensuring that compensation is paid in a fair, transparent and responsible manner.
Speaking during his visit to Juapong in the Volta Region, as part of his two-day Resetting Ghana Tour, President Mahama acknowledged the difficulties faced by families whose homes, farms, businesses and livelihoods were affected by the spillage, and reiterated government’s determination to support affected communities.
He said funds have been allocated to begin compensation payments, while additional resources will be provided where necessary to ensure that all verified victims receive the needed support.
The President stressed that government’s commitment goes beyond compensation, adding that efforts will continue towards restoring livelihoods and strengthening the resilience of affected communities.
Meanwhile, President Mahama has reaffirmed government’s commitment to the construction of the Volivo Bridge project, which is expected to improve connectivity and economic activities in the area.
He explained that a delegation led by the Minister of Roads and Highways recently travelled to Japan and concluded discussions regarding the project.
According to the President, delays over the past eight years resulted in the withdrawal of the previous contractor, requiring government to commence a new procurement process to select another contractor.
He assured the people of Juapong that the process would be completed to pave the way for the commencement of work on the bridge.
